The Madhya Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) has reportedly approved the reinstatement of all seven engineers, including two Chief Engineers, who had been suspended last year over the faulty design of a railway overbridge (ROB) in Bhopal, which had an almost 90-degree turn at one point.

The photos and videos of the under-construction flyover in the Aishbagh area had gone viral nationwide on social media, causing major embarrassment to the state BJP government and drawing sharp criticism of the PWD’s working efficiency.

Sources said that the PWD has recently revoked the engineers’ suspension and ordered their reinstatement.

As per sources, MP PWD Minister Rakesh Singh has also approved the reinstatement of the said engineers. The minister marked in a note sheet that the engineers have remained in suspension for several months, and so they should be reinstated now, sources claimed.

Nonetheless, the Departmental Inquiry against the engineers would continue.

The suspended engineers included In-charge Executive Engineer Shabana Razzaq and Assistant Engineer Shanul Saxena, who were accused of preparing the General Arrangement Drawing without Railway consent, Chief Engineer Sanjay Khande, against whom action was taken over alleged irregular approval of the bridge design, Deputy Engineer Umashankar Mishra, who allegedly got the drawing approved and executed work without obtaining permission from the Railways, In-charge SDO Ravi Shukla, who was also held responsible for lapses during execution of the project, Chief Engineer GP Verma, who faced allegations of procedural irregularities in the construction of the ROB, In-charge Executive Engineer Javed Shakeel, who was accused of failing to discharge his responsibilities appropriately during the project work, and Retired Superintending Engineer MP Singh, who had approved the design while in service.

Meanwhile, the controversial 90-degree turn of the ROB is currently being redesigned and reconstructed jointly by the PWD and the Railways.
